Next Saturday marks the 100 year anniversary of the dedication of the Monument to the Martyrs in Fort Greene Park. There will be celebrations all day in the park, please see the notice below.

The Monument to the Martyrs is the 146' doric column at the top of the grand staircase at the top of the park. The original monument, a very small clapboard house, stood just outside the Navy Yard at Evans and Hudson Streets in 1808; the monument that now stands was dedicated on that former monument's 100 year anniversary.

The Martyrs are the estimated 11,500 patriots who died during the Revolutionary War on board the British Prison Ships moored here on Wallabout Bay, site of the Brooklyn Navy Yard since 1801. More than twice as many Americans died here "than in all the battles of the Revolutionary War," according to American Spirit Magazine.

BNYDC has donated two bus tours of the Yard that day as part of the festivities, and all day long there will be special events, including genealogical workshops, horse and buggy rides, tours of the park, and a formal commemoration with a keynote address by Edwin G. Burrows, author of "Forgotten Patriots; The Untold Story of American Prisoners During the Revolutionary War." Finally, the eternal flame at the top of the column, which has been dark since the 1930s, will be re-lit after more than 70 years.

The Navy Yard is the site of that most significant and unfortunate period of United States history, and the best way to recognize the sacrifice of all those who died on the Prison Ships is to gather in their memory and celebrate our freedom today!

Fellow hams and club members, please join me in congratulating the newest (literally) ham to our community. Earlier this morning the FCC issued the callsign of KC2TVM to Scott B. Haimes (although a spelling error has been corrected, they actually issued it to Scott B. Halmes). Scott spent the past few weeks preparing for the technician class exam in anticipation of a long road trip to Rochester and back next week. He's driving his girlfriend back to school and wanted a radio to use along the way. He thought a CB was the way to go but I enlightened him.

So, after so many field days, 2 or 3 visits to ARRL HQ and 20 years of being exposed to the hobby, Scott finally took the plunge. His email address is . Please congratulate him.
